When it comes to energy, there’s two camps………… better sleep and nutrition on the healthy side. Short term boosts from caffeine and other chemicals on the not-so-healthy side. In reality, REAL energy starts within eat individual cell in your body.
This new way of thinking about energy is so compelling that, in Feb of 2027, hundreds of licensed practitioners and healthcare professionals dedicated to advancing integrative medicine and improve patient care will gather in midtown, New York City at the 22nd Annual Integrative Healthcare Symposium to better understand the biological processes related to tiny structures that every cell uses called mitochondria. They work to help turn nutrients into ATP, a form of energy your cells need to run on. For that reason, they are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell. Aging is also associated with reduced mitochondrial function which is why one of the hottest and most interesting topics among both the science community and consumers is around nutrients that may support mitochondrial health.
The most promising of these…………..is Urolithin A.
The Critical Link Between Mitochondria and Urolithin A
Healthy mitochondria do a lot more than just create energy. In addition to being the cells' powerhouses, mitochondria also have the incredibly difficult job of replacing themselves by cleaning out the old and replacing with new.
It’s the body’s own natural way of conducting cellular cleanup called mitophagy.
Urolithin A has attracted significant attention in the scientific community because recent research suggests it can activate pathways associated with mitophagy and mitochondrial renewal. In fact, a human study published in Nature Metabolism investigated how well Urolithin A was tolerated, as well as, the effects of supplementation on mitochondrial gene expression and additional biomarkers of mitochondrial and cellular health. [1]
The results of that study showed compelling evidence that Urolithin A could be a nutritional approach to promoting healthy aging on the cellular level.
Human Research Studies On Urolithin A
The amount of research being done on a particular nutrient is often a signal of the potential health benefits it may possess. The idea being that no one is going to invest the time and energy if they didn’t think there was significant promise. Here’s a quick summary of a few of the key studies done recently with many more likely to be commissioned in the near future.
A clinical study with randomization published on Cell Reports Medicine explored middle-aged adults receiving either 500 mg or 1,000 mg of Urolithin A per day for four months. Researchers described superior characteristics of leg muscle strength and noted changes in proteins and biomarkers implicated in mitophagy and mitochondrial function. [2]
A different randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open examined 1,000 mg daily in adults aged 65 to 90. Subjects were randomized to receive Urolithin A or placebo, showed significantly higher scores from participation compared to placebo and also affected several biomarkers associated with mitochondrial health. Researchers also noticed decreased C-reactive protein, an inflammation marker. [3]
Collectively, the data points to Urolithin A potentially having a role in supporting mitochondrial health and physical performance into older age but it should not be considered a short-term energy booster. Rather, it has a more profound purpose in regards to our cellular processes about how our mitochondria function throughout our lifetime.
Can I Get Urolithin A From Foods in My Diet?
It’s not quite that simple. I’m sure you’ve heard of a family of nutrients called probiotics. These are the live microorganisms that you consume to foster healthy bacteria in your gut microbiome. The byproducts of that process are known as “postbiotics”. Urolithin A is a very important postbiotic nutrient that results from gut bacteria metabolizing ellagitannins and ellagic acid derived from foods such as pomegranates, walnuts and berries.
Consuming these foods is not enough to ensure that you get an adequate supply of Urolithin A. That’s because the conversion of Urolithin A depends upon a person’s microbiome. In fact, a large number of people barely produce any Urolithin A at all. This is why, if you’re looking for a natural source of Urolithin A, many people are supplementing directly with it in order to ensure that they are getting an adequate amount of this amazing nutrient on a regular basis.
Which Urolithin A Supplement Should I Take?
Urolithin A is a relatively new supplement category, which means that quality, dosage and testing count.
PlantFusion Urolithin A provides 500 mg per capsule, along with 50 mg of pomegranate extract standardized to 40% ellagic acid. Every batch is tested by a 3rd party lab with a minimum 98% guaranteed purity. As with all PlantFusion products, the product is 100% plant-based and vegan certified.
This product was created for people who understand that true energy can’t be gained by quick fixes, but rather the health and performance of the mitochondria in driving healthy cellular function.
The more of these things that we do to optimize the health of our cells, the more likely we are to maintain the foundation necessary to stay active and vital as we age.
