The medium used in the fermentation process is yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and lactic acid
bacteria.

How does PlantFusion’s fermentation process work?

No Carriers: At PlantFusion, our organic fermented line of products use whole foods and ingredients to ensure
our fermented vegetables, fruits, and herbs come with their native qualities. This includes ensuring the
presence of macro and micronutrients, as well as natural fibers, without additional sugars. Our whole
ingredients are organic, natural, clean label, and eco-friendly.  
 
Under Control: Our fermented ingredients are produced using the process of controlled fermentation to avoid
unintended consequences by terminating the process with a heat step. Controlled fermentation benefits
include longer food preservation by creating an environment that inhibits the growth of bacteria; enhanced
flavor; increased nutritional value of certain nutrients that are more bioavailable to the body; and diversity to
introduce a greater variety of foods throughout the year by allowing for preservation of seasonal items.

BPI Certified Compostable Packaging refers to packaging materials that have been certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) to meet specific composability standards. The BPI is a leading authority in North America for compostable products and packaging, and its certification ensures that the packaging meets rigorous standards for biodegradability and composability.

I understand that receiving a BPI Certification is not easy to receive as the standards are high; what are the key points of BPI Certified Compostable Packaging?

Below are the compostable standards needed to meet to receive the BPI Certification Standards:
ASTM Standards: BPI certification is based on American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, specifically ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868. These standards define the requirements for materials to be compostable in industrial composting facilities.

  • Biodegradation: The material must biodegrade at a rate comparable to known compostable materials, typically within 180 days in an industrial composting environment.
  • Disintegration: The packaging must disintegrate so that the resulting compost is not distinguishable from other compost and is free of visible fragments.
  • Eco-Toxicity: The compost produced from the packaging must not have any negative effects on plant growth, ensuring it is safe for the environment

What does it mean to be Lomi Approved?

Lomi Approved is a certification for non-food compostable items, including bioplastics, that can be broken down by Lomi so they can biodegrade faster and ultimately turn into Lomi Earth.


For a product or packaging to be Lomi Approved, the product or packaging must be proven to:

  • Meet compost certification requirements, proven to disintegrate/biodegrade in a composting facility.
  • Won’t release, or become, toxic chemicals.
  • Physically disintegrate to a minimum threshold size after a Lomi cycle.
